Nebraska men’s basketball coach Fred Hoiberg likes his latest signees.

“I’m really excited about both players that we signed yesterday,” Hoiberg told media via Zoom Thursday.

CJ Wilcher, a transfer guard from Xavier, and Oleg Kojanets, a Lithuanian big who played his prep ball at in Ohio, signed their National Letters-of-Intent on Wednesday.

For Wilcher, Hoiberg says he got quality minutes last season for the Muskateers.

“The thing that stands out about CJ is his perimeter shooting,” Hoiberg said. “That’s certainly an area where we need to improve, need to get better. He’ll immediately help us in that area.”

Kojanets sports a 7-foot frame, something that Nebraska hasn’t had under Hoiberg.

“You’re getting size,” Hoiberg said. “A 7-footer that’s got very good skill. I anticipate Oleg coming in and competing for (the center) spot. Strength is always a big thing for all freshman that they have to improve on. When he gets here in the summer, we’ll have an opportunity to start working on his body right away.

“To add a 7-footer that’s got a good skillset should be a good long-term addition for our program.”

Wilcher and Kojanets join a signing class that includes junior college transfer Keisei Tominaga and high school seniors Bryce McGowens and Wilhelm Breidenbach.

Also from Thursday:

-Hoiberg said both Thorir Thorbjarnarson and Shamiel Stevenson are weighing their options on returning for another season or pursuing professional careers. Thor would not count against the scholarship limit should he return, while Stevenson could potentially play two more years in college.

-Hoiberg said the one-time transfer rule would not change the way his staff recruits, adding that it should be a good change for the sport. “I think it’ll give some consistency for the transfers.”

-With open scholarships remaining, Hoiberg indicated the team is ready to move forward as it is. Many thought a true point guard would be a target, but Hoiberg said a number of players could bring the ball up the floor.

-Hoiberg’s son Sam signed Wednesday to walk-on to the Nebrasketball program. Coach Dad said Sam had “some pretty intriguing opportunities”, adding that his son is excited to be part of the program. “Whatever role is asked of him, I know he’ll go out and do it to the best of his ability.”
